|
Many folks think that natural gas is more expensive than other energy sources. The following charts show the actual costs of electricity and propane when converted to mmBTU (the amount of energy delivered by 1 cubic foot of natural gas).
Propane
1 gallon of propane produces 36.5 cubic feet.
1 gallon of propane contains 93,000 BTU.
10.75 gallons of propane produces 1 mmBTU.

To find the cost of propane at any other price:
Multiply the Actual cost of 1 gallon of propane x 10.75
Example: Propane costs $2.37 per gallon.
$2.37 x 10.75 = $25.48 per mmBTU.
Electricity
Electricity is measured and sold in kilowatt hours (KWH).
1 KWH = 3414 BTU
293 KWH = 1 mmBTU
(1 cubic foot of natural gas = 1 mmBTU)

To determine your specific cost for electricity:
Take the cost per kilowatt hour and multiply by 293.
Example: Your average cost per kilowatt hour is 11.5 cents.
$0.115 x 293 = $33.70 per equivalent mmBTU.
