Natural Gas Safety for Kids!

Gas Safety

If you smell the odor of Natural Gas, indoors or outdoors, DO NOT USE A PHONE IN THE AREA THAT THE ODOR IS DETECTED. Contact Southwest Texas Municipal IMMEDIATELY at: (432) 294-1529

There is a dispatcher on duty Monday through Friday from 8:00-5:00. A service person is on duty after hours, weekends and holidays. Southwest Texas Municipal Gas will respond to natural gas leaks, regardless of the location of the leak, either on a company line, or the customer's line. If it appears that escaping gas has entered a building so that a fire or explosion is imminent, use the following procedures:

1. Vacate the building without turning lights on or off, taking all occupants, including pets, with you. Be absolutely certain you can account for all occupants.
2. Use a neighbor's telephone or cell phone, away from the area affected by the gas leak, to contact Southwest Texas Municipal Gas. All electronics, especially when turned on or off, can produce a spark that can cause fire or explosion.
3. Remain outside, away from the affected area, until after the gas service worker has declared the building safe for re-entry. You cannot predict how much danger actually exists. It is better to over react to a possible gas problem than to assume that no danger exists.

Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Corporation, as a Natural Gas Distribution System Operator, is required to inform its Natural Gas Customers of the following:

Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Corporation does not maintain the buried piping between the gas meters and the structure or the equipment utilizing the gas.
Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Corporation does not provide corrosion protection for the customer-owned and maintained piping. This piping may be subject to potential hazards of corrosion and leakage if it is not maintained.
    a. This piping should be periodically inspected for leaks and if metallic, for corrosion
b. The piping should be repaired if any unsafe condition in discovered.
When excavating near buried gas piping, the piping should be located in advance, and the excavation done by hand.
Plumbers and heating contractors can assist in the locating, inspecting, and repairing of the customer's buried piping.
