Natural Gas Safety for Kids!

Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Corporation was created in 1964 as a cooperative effort between the cities of Alpine and Marfa, Texas. An 84- mile transmission pipeline was constructed from a point 5 miles north of Saragosa, Texas, through the mountains, and finally to Alpine and Marfa, for the purpose of supplying natural gas to the two cities. Along the way, the communities of Saragosa, Bragado, Balmorhea, Toyhavale and Fort Davis were also served by the new pipeline. In addition to the transmission pipeline, distribution pipelines within each of the above mentioned communities were constructed in order to provide natural gas to its customers.

In 1998, West Texas Gas, Inc. purchased the transmission pipeline and the rights to serve all communities except Alpine, Marfa and Fort Davis. The sale of those assets enabled Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Corporation to be debt free for the first time in it's history.

Today, Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Corporation continues to be operated for and on behalf of the cities of Marfa and Alpine.
